Sindh governor lauds Lahore Press Club’s role in promoting press freedom

LAHORE, Nov 07 (APP):Sindh Governor Syed Muhammad Nehal Hashmi has said that the Lahore Press Club (LPC) has always played a leading role in the struggle for press freedom and stood by the truth.
He attended the Lahore Press Club’s ‘Guest of Honour’ programme here on Saturday and, while talking to the media, acknowledged that journalists were facing numerous challenges and prayed that may Allah Almighty grant them the strength to overcome these difficulties.
“If communication is strong, nothing can stop a society from progressing. However, if communication becomes weak, no one can ensure the development of society,” he said.
He said that whenever the PML-N came to power, it paid special attention to the national economy, the problems of ordinary people and infrastructure development.
Recalling Nawaz Sharif’s tenure as Punjab chief minister in 1985, the governor said he had focused on infrastructure development and introduced several projects, including motorways, airports and the Yellow Cab Scheme.
Responding to a question, he said Nawaz Sharif had taken all communities along, including Baloch and Pashtuns.
Regarding the creation of new provinces in Sindh, he said the decision rested with the people of the province. He added that he would be in a better position to respond if the question were raised by journalists in Sindh.
He said that while print and electronic media had traditionally been the primary forms of media, social media had engaged in activities merely to gain popularity, ultimately leading to introduction of laws.
He stressed that both the government and society would have to play their respective roles to address the prevailing challenges.
Referring to Karachi, he said the city was the gateway to Pakistan, made a significant contribution to the national economy and generated substantial tax revenue.
Earlier, Lahore Press Club President Arshad Ansari said, “Syed Nehal Hashmi is a political worker who has opened the doors of the Governor’s House to the common people after assuming the office of Sindh governor.”
He said Hashmi had made great sacrifices in politics.
At the conclusion of the programme, Arshad Ansari presented the distinguished guest with a commemorative shield and a bouquet.
