Young women step forward as torchbearers to combat climate-driven gender crisis at FJWU dialogue

RAWALPINDI, Nov 05 (APP):Young women and female students are stepping up as front-line advocates to tackle the devastating societal impacts of climate change on women.
During a dialogue titled ‘Her Climate Dialogue’ organized by FJWU in collaboration with the Forum for Dignity Initiatives (FDI) on Thursday, female students actively led discussions and visual advocacy along with leading human rights experts, policy analysts and humanitarian practitioners.
Panelists, including UNFPA Humanitarian Programme Analyst Dr. Rasheed Ahmed, BEDARI Executive Director Anbreen Ajaib, and Child Protection Expert Arshad Mahmood emphasized that environmental calamities disrupt livelihoods and disproportionately increase social vulnerabilities for young girls.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Bushra Mirza commended the students’ leadership, reiterating that the university remains steadfast in empowering female scholars to drive research, legislative awareness, and rights-based disaster protection across Pakistan.
She highlighted that by participating in this climate dialogue, female students gain critical insights into the intersection of environmental policy, human rights, and disaster governance.
The interactive dialogue equips them with applied advocacy and leadership skills, enabling them to transform academic knowledge into community-level awareness.
FJWU Pro Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Azra Yasmin, FDI Executive Director Uzma Yaqoob, and IR Department Head Dr. Saima Ashraf Kayani stressed the urgency of integrating female youth into policy frameworks. They opined that engaging the students in visual and thematic art forms allows students to develop creative communication strategies, establishing them as effective change agents capable of addressing complex social crises.
Reinforcing their role as community torchbearers, students from FJWU’s Department of Fine Arts, under the guidance of Department Chair Dr. Surriyya Chaudhary, organized a narrative painting exhibition and performance illustrating the lived reality of climate-displaced women and the rise of climate-driven child marriages, known as the “monsoon brides” phenomenon.
