ISLAMABAD, Oct 27 (APP):Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan on Tuesday directed officials to prepare a comprehensive business plan for Pakistan Post to improve its financial stability, accelerate digitalization and safeguard the future of its 22,000 employees.
Chairing a high-level meeting to review the institution’s financial losses, administrative challenges and reform initiatives, the minister emphasized the need for a viable strategy to modernize Pakistan Post in line with contemporary requirements, restore its financial stability and transform it into a profitable institution, said a press release.
He said that digitalizing the postal system was an urgent necessity. However, the continued delay in this process over the past 10 years was a matter of great concern. He questioned why and where the arrangements with EXIM Bank for digitalization had stalled and what had caused such a prolonged delay in this important initiative.
Abdul Aleem Khan further stated that 86 major post offices across the country could have been digitized in the first phase. However, the failure to take timely action had deprived the institution of modern facilities, leaving it unable to compete effectively with other logistics providers.
The minister cautioned that the entire institution would bear the consequences of any negligence on the part of its officers.
He stressed that an effective, comprehensive and viable business plan must be developed immediately to safeguard the future of Pakistan Post’s 22,000 employees.
He said that, in the current competitive environment, Pakistan Post must move beyond traditional practices and adopt modern technology, improved administrative systems and an effective business strategy to grow.
Aleem Khan said that comprehensive reforms were essential to transform Pakistan Post into a profitable and self-sustaining institution. He warned that failure to take timely and effective measures could further jeopardize the institution’s future.
He directed the relevant officials to prepare a concrete business plan, taking into account Pakistan Post’s operational capacity, available resources and market requirements. The plan should focus on reducing financial losses and increasing revenue, he added.
During a briefing on the institution’s financial challenges and existing administrative structure, the meeting was informed that the provision of free services in the past, coupled with the lack of an effective business strategy had contributed to Pakistan Post’s financial difficulties.
The recruitment of an additional 4,000 employees in 2023 had further increased the institution’s financial burden. In this regard, the need for effective measures to restructure the organization, ensure the effective utilization of human resources and reduce expenditure was emphasized.
The Minister directed officials to develop a restructuring plan for Pakistan Post based on clearly defined objectives, practical measures and measurable outcomes.
He said that merely proposing reforms was not enough; their timely implementation must also be ensured to modernize the institution. He instructed senior Pakistan Post officials to prepare a comprehensive and coordinated programme for submission to the Prime Minister, incorporating digitalization, financial stabilization, administrative reforms and effective measures to enhance revenue.
During the meeting, the Federal Secretary for Communications and the Director General of Pakistan Post briefed the Minister on the institution’s current situation, financial challenges, digitalization initiatives and other key matters.
The meeting emphasized the importance of a coordinated strategy and practical measures to address the challenges facing Pakistan Post and improve its credibility, efficiency and overall performance
