ISLAMABAD, Oct 26 (APP):World Day for Audiovisual Heritage will be observed on October 27 across the globe, including Pakistan, to highlight the importance of preserving films, radio and television broadcasts, sound recordings and other audiovisual materials that document humanity’s history, cultural diversity and collective memory.
Like every year, public and private departments and institutions will arrange various activities to mark the day and raise awareness about the importance of safeguarding audiovisual heritage for present and future generations.
This year’s theme, “Your Window to the World,” underscores the role of audiovisual heritage in connecting societies, promoting cross-cultural understanding and providing future generations with access to historical experiences, traditions and voices of communities worldwide.
According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), audiovisual archives represent a valuable source of knowledge, reflecting the social, cultural and linguistic diversity of communities. Their preservation and continued public accessibility are essential to safeguarding collective memory and ensuring that important historical records are not lost.
UNESCO has highlighted ongoing efforts to protect endangered documentary heritage, including audiovisual collections threatened by physical deterioration, natural disasters, unsuitable storage conditions and obsolete recording technologies.
The World Day for Audiovisual Heritage commemorates the adoption of the Recommendation for the Safeguarding and Preservation of Moving Images by UNESCO’s General Conference in 1980. The international observance was proclaimed in 2005 to raise awareness about the vulnerability of audiovisual documents and the need for urgent preservation measures.
UNESCO’s Memory of the World Programme, established in 1992, works to safeguard documentary heritage and improve access to historical records for present and future generations. The 2015 UNESCO Recommendation concerning the preservation of, and access to, documentary heritage, including in digital form, also provides an important framework for these efforts.
The annual observance highlights the need for governments, cultural institutions, broadcasters, archives, filmmakers and preservation specialists to strengthen conservation measures, invest in digitization and ensure that audiovisual materials remain accessible despite technological changes.
Audiovisual archives preserve not only significant historical events but also the everyday experiences, languages, artistic expressions and cultural traditions that shape societies.
Their protection is vital to maintaining cultural identity, supporting research and education, and passing the documentary record of humanity on to future generations.
