CTO orders strict crackdown on heavy traffic, commercial vehicles to curb accidents

LAHORE, Oct 18 (APP):In a bid to prevent road accidents and ensure safe travel for citizens, Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Lahore Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi has ordered special checking and strict enforcement against public service vehicles, commercial vehicles, and heavy traffic entering the provincial capital.
Under the fresh directives, a complete ban has been placed on the entry and movement of heavy traffic within city limits during daytime hours. Heavy vehicles, including tractor-trolleys, trailers, trucks, loader vehicles, and heavy construction machinery, are strictly prohibited from entering or operating in the city between 7:00 AM and 11:00 PM.
The CTO warned that heavy vehicles violating these time restrictions will face impounding, traffic fines (challans), and formal legal cases. During nighttime hours, heavy traffic is being allowed to enter the city in a phased manner organized into controlled convoys, while oil tankers are restricted to operating strictly within specified hours.
Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi highlighted that cargo protruding beyond the body dimensions of commercial vehicles remains a major cause of fatal accidents, ordering zero tolerance against over-dimensioned loads.
Quoting traffic statistics, the CTO revealed that commercial vehicles account for only 4.5 percent of the city’s total traffic volume, yet they are involved in 44 percent of traffic accidents. He emphasized that strict enforcement and regular checks on heavy and commercial transport will continue unabated to minimize road casualties and maintain smooth traffic flow across the city.
