Experts call for warning labels to curb excessive salt consumption

Public health advocates have called for clear front-of-package warning labels on packaged food products to help consumers identify items high in sodium.

ISLAMABAD, Oct 15 (APP):Public health advocates have called for clear front-of-package warning labels on packaged food products to help consumers identify items high in sodium.
According to them, reducing excessive salt consumption is essential to preventing high blood pressure and related cardiovascular diseases.
World Health Organization (WHO) said that adults should consume less than two grams of sodium per day, equivalent to less than five grams of salt, to reduce the risk of hypertension and other health complications.
Health advocates, including the Pakistan National Heart Association (PANAH), have emphasized that prominent warning labels on the front of food packaging can help consumers quickly identify products containing excessive sodium and make informed purchasing decisions.
Excessive sodium consumption is a major risk factor for high blood pressure, which increases the likelihood of heart disease and stroke. A significant amount of sodium in many diets comes from processed and packaged foods, making clear nutritional information particularly important.
Front-of-package warning labels can help consumers recognize products high in sodium without having to interpret complex nutritional information printed on the back of packaging. Such labels can also encourage manufacturers to reconsider product formulations and reduce excessive salt content.
Public health advocates have called for evidence-based food labelling policies alongside public awareness campaigns to promote healthier dietary habits and reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases in Pakistan.
They stressed that providing consumers with clear and easily understandable nutritional information at the point of purchase could support healthier food choices and contribute to improved public health outcomes.
