PIMS announces reforms to improve healthcare services

The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has launched a series of institutional reforms to improve patient care, modernize medical equipment, expand specialized treatment facilities and strengthen postgraduate medical education.

ISLAMABAD, Oct 10 (APP):The Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has launched a series of institutional reforms to improve patient care, modernize medical equipment, expand specialized treatment facilities and strengthen postgraduate medical education.
Executive Director PIMS Prof. Dr. Tanwir Khaliq said the measures aimed to improve hospital operations, ensure the timely availability of medicines and surgical supplies, and promote transparent, merit-based recruitment and training across clinical and academic departments.
He said administrative procedures for the procurement of medicines and essential medical equipment had been streamlined, while pending files were processed to ensure uninterrupted supplies to inpatient wards and outpatient departments.
Surgical units were also being equipped with essential instruments, sutures and consumables to maintain smooth operations.
With the support of the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination, PIMS is upgrading outdated medical equipment in General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Pulmonology and Renal Transplant Services, alongside improvements to the Dialysis Unit.
Tender documents for various safety and technical upgrades have advanced to the technical and financial evaluation stages, according to the hospital administration.
The institution is also planning to expand specialized postgraduate education through master’s degree programmes in Breast Surgery, Colorectal Surgery, Hepatobiliary Surgery and Minimal Access Surgery under the Department of General Surgery, in affiliation with Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU).
Other initiatives include the establishment of a dedicated Department of Thoracic Surgery with specialized operating facilities, planning for an independent Emergency Medicine Department, and rehabilitation and expansion of the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Centre to increase bed capacity and operating facilities.
PIMS is also developing proposals to introduce specialized services in Lifestyle Medicine, Endocrinology, Spine Surgery, Paediatric Cardiology and Paediatric Orthopaedic Surgery.
To strengthen human resource capacity, 30 nursing professionals have completed international certification in nursing leadership, patient safety and clinical management.
The administration is also implementing the Federal Central Induction Policy through a specialized academic committee to ensure transparent, merit-based selection of postgraduate trainees, house officers and nursing personnel.
Prof. Dr. Tanwir Khaliq said the reforms reflected the institution’s commitment to improving clinical standards, strengthening institutional management and providing better healthcare services through modern infrastructure, specialized medical education and transparent recruitment practices.
