ISLAMABAD, Oct 09 (APP): The Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA), in collaboration with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has successfully concluded a five-day National Workshop on Commercial Grade Item Dedication (CGD) for nuclear safety-related applications. The workshop was held at PNRA headquarters, from Oct 05 to 09, 2026.
The workshop was organized by the National Institute of Safety and Security (NISAS), as it serves as an IAEA Collaboration Centre in the areas of nuclear safety and radiation protection. The workshop brought together regulatory staff, nuclear installation operators and other stakeholders involved in the nuclear supply chain.
Commercial Grade Item Dedication is an important process used in the nuclear industry when a commercially manufactured item may be considered for a safety-related application. It involves identifying important safety characteristics and verifying them through appropriate inspection, testing, analysis or other means to provide confidence that the item can perform its intended safety function safely and reliably.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Shahid Rashid, Member (Executive) PNRA, emphasized the importance of reliable and qualified equipment for the safe operation of nuclear installations. He stated that, “Factors such as technological advancement, equipment obsolescence and the evolving global supply chain can affect the availability of specialized nuclear-grade components, and Commercial Grade Item Dedication provides an important mechanism for establishing confidence that commercially available items can meet the requirements for intended use in nuclear installations.”
The five-day workshop featured four international experts: Ms. Man Liu from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mr. Pekka Tapani Pyy from Finland, and Mr. Kwang Young Sohn and Mr. Yun Goo Kim from the Republic of Korea. The experts shared international experience and practical knowledge on commercial grade item dedication and nuclear supply-chain management.
The workshop contributed in strengthening Pakistan’s capabilities in nuclear safety and supply-chain oversight, in line with applicable requirements and international good practices.
