96 arrested, 148kg plastic bags seized as ICT admin continues anti-polythene campaign

ISLAMABAD, Oct 6 (APP):Islamabad’s district administration has intensified its campaign against banned polythene bags, resulting in 96 arrests and the seizure of 148 kilograms of prohibited plastic bags during the latest city-wide crackdown.
The administration said the drive aims to reduce plastic pollution and protect the environment across the federal capital.
The district administration said daily operations are continuing against the use, sale and distribution of banned polythene bags as part of ongoing efforts to keep Islamabad free from plastic pollution.
During recent enforcement actions across different parts of the city, authorities arrested 96 individuals and confiscated 148 kilograms of prohibited plastic bags. Officials said the campaign is focused on reducing the environmental impact of plastic waste and protecting the city’s natural surroundings.
According to the district administration, polythene bags contribute to land and water pollution and also create obstacles in drainage systems. Officials said discarded plastic bags often accumulate in drains and waterways, causing blockages that can affect the flow of water.
Alongside enforcement measures, the administration has also launched an awareness campaign to educate the public about the ban on plastic bags and the importance of using environmentally friendly alternatives. The campaign includes information for residents, traders and businesses about the harmful effects of plastic waste and the benefits of sustainable options.
The district administration urged citizens to adopt cloth bags and other eco-friendly shopping bags instead of using prohibited plastic bags. Residents were encouraged to play their part in reducing plastic waste and supporting efforts aimed at environmental protection.
Shopkeepers and business owners were also advised to stop supplying banned plastic bags and promote the use of environmentally friendly alternatives among customers. Officials said cooperation from the business community is essential for the successful implementation of the ban.
The administration further appealed to the public to avoid throwing plastic bags on roads, in drains and at other public places. Proper disposal of waste and responsible environmental practices, officials said, can help reduce pollution and improve cleanliness across the city.
Reaffirming its commitment to a cleaner environment, the district administration called on both citizens and the business community to support the ongoing campaign. Officials said collective efforts are necessary to achieve the goal of a clean, green and healthy Islamabad while reducing the harmful effects of plastic pollution.
