ISLAMABAD, Oct 1 (APP):The International Labour Organization (ILO), in collaboration with the National Productivity Organization (NPO) Pakistan, is scaling up its Just Transition and Climate Change initiative to help Pakistani industries improve resource efficiency, enhance green productivity and strengthen export competitiveness.
The initiative aims to assist enterprises in adopting energy-efficient and climate-friendly practices, improving occupational safety, and driving green skills development to helps workers and businesses adapt to the changing demands of the global workplace, said a news release.
As consumers, international buyers, and global supply chains increasingly demand environmentally sustainable products, the transition to a greener economy presents both a critical challenge and a major opportunity for the country.
NPO Pakistan, which has the relevant professional expertise and equipment, was selected through an open bidding process to execute the first phase of the initiative.
During Phase-I, direct interventions were carried out in 16 industrial manufacturing units in the automobile and textile sectors. These interventions included resource-efficiency (RE) and energy assessments, shop-floor productivity safety audits.
In addition, four dissemination workshops and two Training of Trainers (ToT) sessions were conducted in Lahore and Karachi, reaching around 300 stakeholders.
Building on these encouraging initial results, including potential annual savings of approximately Rs. 26.4 million, and the practical lessons identified through NPO’s assessments as presented by the beneficiary companies during dissemination workshops held this month in Lahore and Karachi
The ILO intended to partner with NPO to expand the initiative nationwide, focusing on wider dissemination and replication of proven resource- and energy-efficiency practices.
NPO has also drafted RE Law to reach out national wide. Firms level IMPS is also being developed with the technical assistance of foreign expert.
At the national level, this expanded collaboration aims to drive higher industrial productivity, lower production costs, reduce natural resource consumption, and build greater resilience to climate risks positioning Pakistani enterprises and workers to thrive in the emerging global green economy.
