Suthra Punjab: zero tolerance for negligence

LAHORE, Sep 30 (APP):Special Assistant to the Chief Minister (SACM) Punjab Shoaib Mirza has directed
the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) to ensure 100 per cent attendance
of its staff, effective field surveillance and daily clearance of temporary waste collection
points under the Suthra Punjab initiative.
He was addressing a review meeting on cleanliness arrangements in Lahore, which he co-chaired with Deputy Commissioner Lahore Muhammad Ali Ejaz. LWMC Chief Executive Officer Shahryar Arif Khan, all Assistant Commissioners, Deputy CEOs of LWMC and zonal managers attended the meeting.
The SACM directed that zero tolerance be adopted towards negligence in attendance and enforcement of cleanliness arrangements. He directed that field surveillance and anti-littering squads be made more effective and kept fully active to improve cleanliness arrangements across the city. He also directed that temporary collection points be cleared on a daily basis without fail and that Assistant Commissioners and town managers be kept mobilised for better clearance arrangements.
The SACM directed that all observations and shortcomings identified during field inspections be addressed before the next follow-up meeting.
LWMC CEO Shahryar Arif Khan briefed the meeting on the company’s ongoing operations. He said enforcement activities for solid waste collection and field surveillance through anti-littering bikers squads were continuing, while clearance of temporary collection points was also under way and field operations were being further improved.
The Assistant Commissioners briefed the meeting on cleanliness arrangements and identified shortcomings in their respective tehsils. The meeting was informed that minor attendance issues had been observed at some locations, while effective clearance of temporary collection points remained an issue at a few places.
The field surveyors were actively conducting inspections and recording observations with complete site identification, the meeting was told.
Taking notice of poor performance, Shoaib Mirza directed the transfer of the LWMC Deputy CEO South and ordered registration of an FIR against a town manager for negligence in official duties. He further directed that heavy fines be imposed on contractors for ineffective clearance operations.
The SACM made it clear that no department, agency or institution other than the designated field surveyors would be allowed to conduct inspections of waste points. “There will be no compromise on Suthra Punjab,” he said, directing that 100 per cent attendance of LWMC staff be ensured and field surveillance by anti-littering squads and bikers further strengthened.
DC Lahore Muhammad Ali Ejaz directed all Assistant Commissioners to make field inspections for cleanliness and solid waste management fully effective. He directed town managers and zonal managers to improve their performance, adding that negligence would not be tolerated. “Our mission is to provide citizens with a clean Lahore, and monitoring will continue on a daily basis,” the DC said.
