A petition has been filed in the Peshawar High Court seeking effective implementation of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Animal Welfare Act 2024 and measures to prevent cruelty against animals, particularly stray dogs.
PHC moved for effective implementation of KP Animal Welfare Act 2024
PESHAWAR, Sep 29 (APP): A petition has been filed in the Peshawar High Court seeking effective implementation of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Animal Welfare Act 2024 and measures to prevent cruelty against animals, particularly stray dogs.
The Chief Secretary, Livestock Department, Local Government Department, Environment Department, Wildlife Department and other relevant authorities have been made respondents in the petition.
The petitioner submitted that although the provincial government had enacted the Animal Welfare Act 2024, the rules and regulations necessary for its implementation had yet to be framed.
The petition stated that Animal Welfare Inspectors had also not been appointed under the law, while the Animal Welfare Board had yet to be constituted.
The petitioner claimed that incidents of poisoning and shooting stray dogs to death were increasing in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, resulting in growing concerns over inhumane treatment of animals.
The petition sought directions to the relevant authorities to prevent the killing of stray dogs through poisoning, firing or other cruel methods and ensure full implementation of the Animal Welfare Act 2024.
It also requested the establishment of government-run animal shelters in major cities of the province and necessary steps for the formation of Animal Welfare Committees.
