Railways exceeds freight revenue target by seven percent last fiscal year
ISLAMABAD, Sep 29 (APP):Pakistan Railways has expanded its freight operations with commodity-specific train services to attract additional traffic, improve logistics services and enhance revenue generation.
“Pakistan Railways was continuously expanding its freight operations, with freight-specific services already in operation, including cargo express, coal, container and Phosphate trains, an official in the Ministry told APP.
He said the department was also introducing new commodity-specific services, including edible oil and automobile trains, to meet the growing transportation requirements of various industries and attract additional freight traffic.
Regarding the current freight movement capacity, he said Pakistan Railways could operate almost 10 freight trains per day from Karachi to up-country destinations.
He said during the financial year 2025-26, Pakistan Railways generated almost Rs41 billion from freight trains against the budgetary target of Rs38 billion, exceeding the target by 7 per cent.
The official said the freight revenue was also 32 per cent higher than the revenue generated from freight-specific trains during the previous financial year, he added.
To a question, he said that Pakistan Railways is set to roll out an extensive package of reforms aimed at transforming the department into a profitable, modern and passenger-centric national transport system.
“The wide-ranging measures focus on revitalizing the freight sector, expanding passenger services, introducing technological upgrades, and improving facilities at railway stations across the country,” he added.
The official said the reform agenda places strong emphasis on strengthening the freight sector to ensure long-term financial sustainability. New freight wagons have already been added to the fleet, while dedicated freight corridors are under development to accelerate cargo movement.
“The measures to improve cargo handling and reduce turnaround time are also underway, along with efforts to establish strategic partnerships with major bulk clients,” he added.
