ISLAMABAD, Sep 24 (APP):National Book Foundation (NBF), under the Ministry of Federal Education and Professional Training, has published a significant research work by renowned linguist, researcher and educationist Dr. Humaira Sadiq Qureshi, titled “Slang in Urdu Dictionaries and Urdu Slang Dictionaries (In the Light of the Concept of Slang).”
The 304-page book is priced at Rs. 1,430 and is available at a 50% discount at NBF bookshops and outlets across the country.
The book presents a linguistic and lexicographical study of informal, colloquial, popular and slang expressions used in Urdu, including vocabulary prevalent in specific social and professional circles. The author examines the concept, principles, characteristics and significance of slang at the global level, along with its historical and contemporary development in Urdu.
The research work is divided into five chapters. The first chapter discusses the nature and basic concepts of slang and Urdu slang. The second identifies slang expressions found in prominent Urdu dictionaries and publications.
The third reviews major Urdu slang dictionaries, while the fourth examines slang commonly used in contemporary Pakistani society, particularly on social media, the internet and other digital platforms. The fifth chapter presents an overall review, research findings and recommendations.
The book also critically examines relevant works by prominent scholars, including Dr. Rauf Parekh, Dr. Qasim Yaqub, Shamsur Rahman Faruqi and Naseer Turabi.
Dr. Humaira Sadiq Qureshi holds a PhD in Urdu Linguistics, an MPhil in Iqbaliat, an M.Ed, and master’s degrees in Urdu and Islamic Studies. She is currently serving as an Assistant Professor at the Federal Government Educational Institutions (Cantonments & Garrisons), Rawalpindi. Her research and critical articles have appeared in various national journals and periodicals.
