ISLAMABAD, Sep 21 (APP):Chairperson Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Senator Rubina Khalid Monday called for promoting dialogue, diplomacy and negotiations instead of war and conflict to achieve sustainable peace, stressing that peace also required justice, equality, human dignity and protection of vulnerable segments of society.
In her message on the International Day of Peace, she said the day provided an opportunity to renew the commitment to promoting peace, tolerance, dialogue and mutual respect across the world.
Senator Rubina Khalid said sustainable peace could not be achieved through conflict and confrontation, stressing the need to promote peaceful means for resolving disputes.
She said peace is not merely the end of war but also meant ensuring justice, equality, human dignity and safe societies.
She said civilians, particularly women and children, are among the worst affected by conflicts in different parts of the world, urging the international community to play an effective role in the peaceful resolution of conflicts and protection of civilians.
The BISP chairperson said ending poverty, hunger, deprivation and inequality are of fundamental importance for establishing sustainable peace.
She said investment in social protection, education, healthcare and employment also strengthened the foundations of peace.
Senator Rubina Khalid said empowering women and vulnerable segments of society economically and socially is essential for building peaceful and stable societies.
She said BISP is playing its role in promoting economic stability by providing social protection to deserving and disadvantaged families.
She said peace and development were interconnected, adding that sustainable development is essential for achieving lasting peace.
Senator Rubina Khalid said dialogue, tolerance and respect for each other’s rights are important means of promoting peace and harmony in societies.
She said the world needed to choose the path of cooperation instead of confrontation, unity instead of division and humanity instead of hatred.
She said the International Day of Peace is also an occasion to reaffirm the commitment to protecting vulnerable and deprived segments of society and ensuring their dignity and equal opportunities.
The BISP chairperson said building a peaceful world is a shared responsibility of governments and every individual in society.
She said the world today needed peace instead of wars, love instead of hatred and dialogue instead of conflicts.
