Polio virus detected in Rawalpindi traced to transmission from visiting Afghan family, says Uzma Kardar
RAWALPINDI, Sep 18 (APP):The polio strain detected in Rawalpindi’s environmental sample in July was genetically linked to a family that migrated from Afghanistan. Cross-border transmission of polio virus remains a challange to which all available resources are being utilized.
This was revealed by Uzma Kardar, CM Punjab Focal Person on Polio eradication, during a press conference here on Friday.
Uzma said that amid the ongoing challenge of imported viral cases, health authorities are actively combating this external threat to prevent local viral establishment.
The special four-day campaign in Rawalpindi will deploy over 8,000 frontline workers to ensure comprehensive coverage across all union councils. The broader campaign spans 13 high-risk districts in Punjab, targeting more than 10 million children.
Underlining that polio eradication remains a top priority for the provincial government, Uzma Kardar urged parents to cooperate fully with visiting vaccination teams. She added that completely eliminating the virus is crucial to safeguarding public health and sparing Pakistani citizens from mandatory pre-departure polio vaccination requirements prior to performing Hajj, Umrah, or traveling internationally.
