KP lawmakers briefed on cervical cancer prevention, HPV vaccination
PESHAWAR, Sep 17 (APP):A high-level orientation session on cervical cancer prevention and HPV vaccination brought together Members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, strengthening political ownership and collective action toward cervical cancer elimination.
The session was organized by Jhpiego Pakistan, in collaboration with the Expanded Programme for Immunization (EPI), Health Department, ahead of the upcoming KP HPV vaccination campaign in November 2026.
Speaker KP Assembly, Babar Saleem Swati, attended as chief guest, while Minister for Health KP, Khaleeq-ur-Rehman, delivered the keynote address and highlighted the government’s commitment to protecting adolescent girls through evidence-based cervical cancer prevention and HPV vaccination. The Jhpiego delegation was led by Country Director, Dr. Aminah Khan.
The session brought together Provincial Ministers of KP, Advisors, Special Assistants to the Chief Minister, and Members of the Provincial Assembly, providing a high-level platform for policymakers to hear directly from technical experts on the burden of cervical cancer, evidence-based prevention, and the critical role of HPV vaccination in protecting adolescent girls.
An engaging and interactive question-and-answer session allowed parliamentarians to raise questions and exchange perspectives on vaccine confidence, community awareness and campaign implementation, while exploring how political leadership and community influence can help build confidence and support the successful rollout of the HPV vaccination campaign across KP.
Parliamentarians expressed support for the upcoming HPV vaccination campaign and reaffirmed commitment to using their leadership and influence to promote awareness and support implementation across the province.
In merits to mention here that globally and in Pakistan, Jhpiego works hand in hand with governments, providing technical assistance, evidence-based knowledge transfer, and capacity strengthening to help build stronger health systems and improve the quality of care.
The organization also played an effective role in awareness creation during the first phase of cervical cancer prevention immunization programme in 2025.
