PFA shuts five water filtration plants in Jahania over failed water tests
MULTAN, Sep 13 (APP):The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) has intensified inspections of water filtration plants and food businesses across the Multan division to ensure the provision of safe and hygienic food and drinking water to citizens,here on Sunday.
On the special directions of PFA Director General, food safety teams inspected five water filtration plants in Jahanian, where water samples collected on the spot failed laboratory tests after bacteria were detected in the water.
The authority suspended production at the affected plants and directed the operators to take corrective measures before resuming operations.
In Multan,a well-known bakery located at MDA Chowk was fined Rs.40,000 for failing to install a proper filtration system, maintaining no record of oil changes and having insects,dirt and extremely poor sanitation conditions in its processing area.
A sweets and confectionery unit at Chah Lahori Wala, Basti Alamgir,was fined Rs.50,000 for using expired flavours in food preparation while a preserves-producing unit at Chah Janoon Wala was fined Rs.30,000 for storing preserves in chemical drums and using open and prohibited ingredients.
The PFA teams also inspected water filtration plants at 132-T/R,Pull 137,112-T/R and Atta Town Railway Road in Jahanian.
Water samples collected from the plants were found to be contaminated with bacteria, leading to their closure until the required improvements are made.
The PFA Director General warned that strict action would be taken against those selling substandard or contaminated water to citizens under the guise of mineral water.
He urged citizens to report complaints regarding food safety through social media platforms or the PFA helpline 1223.
