ISLAMABAD, Sep 08 (APP):The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said on Tuesday that no active monsoon system is currently affecting Pakistan and no significant rainfall is expected over the next couple of days.
The forecast was issued by the Emergency Response Committee (ERC), meeting at the NDMA headquarters in Islamabad on the Prime Minister’s directions, reviewed the country’s weather and hydrological situation, preparedness and response measures amid forecasts of rising temperatures across various parts of the country.
The 18th meeting of the ERC was held at the National Emergencies Operations Centre (NEOC), NDMA headquarters, under the chairmanship of Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Professor Ahsan Iqbal, who participated through video link.
Chairman NDMA Lt Gen Inam Haider Malik, representatives of provincial disaster management authorities (PDMAs), the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), and senior officials from relevant federal ministries and departments attended the meeting.
The committee reviewed the prevailing weather situation, hydrological conditions, temperature trends, weather outlook and the overall preparedness of federal and provincial authorities.
The NEOC presented a comprehensive situational briefing covering the latest weather forecasts, river flows, hydrological conditions and the anticipated weather pattern over the coming days.
According to the NDMA briefing, Pakistan is currently not under the influence of an active monsoon system, while no significant monsoon rainfall activity is expected during the next couple of days.
At the same time, temperatures are forecast to rise in various parts of the country in the coming days.
The committee stressed that the anticipated increase in temperatures required authorities to remain vigilant about heat-related risks, increased water demand and other associated impacts, particularly in areas expected to experience higher temperatures.
It also underscored the need for continued monitoring of vulnerable areas and timely dissemination of weather-related information to the public.
Provincial authorities briefed the committee on their preparedness arrangements, availability of emergency resources, response capacities and coordination mechanisms with district administrations.
Representatives of relevant federal and provincial departments and response agencies also updated the committee on their preparedness measures and operational readiness.
The meeting placed particular emphasis on continuous weather monitoring, timely dissemination of early warnings and advisories, uninterrupted communication and maintaining the operational readiness of response agencies.
The chair directed all concerned departments and response agencies to remain proactive and ensure effective coordination at the national, provincial and district levels.
The committee reiterated that the NDMA, through the NEOC, would continue to closely monitor the country’s weather and hydrological situation and issue timely advisories to all relevant stakeholders to ensure the safety and protection of vulnerable communities.
