Relatives of deceased mountaineer appeal to KP govt for recovery of body from Swat glacier
PESHAWAR, Aug 29 (APP): The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and Chief Minister Sohail Afridi have been urged to facilitate the recovery of the body of renowned mountaineer Syed Ali Shah, who remains buried in the Falak Sar Glacier.
The relatives of Syed Ali Shah, a mountain guide who died after falling into a gorge following a glacier burst in Matiltan area of Upper Swat’s Kalam Valley in July 2026, have appealed to the KP government to undertake an operation to retrieve his body from the inaccessible mountainous terrain.
In the appeal, the relatives said the body of mountaineer Syed Ali Shah was traced from a glacier at ‘Falak Sar’ in the Mittaltan area of Swat at an altitude of 5,200 meters using a drone.
Young volunteers from Swat have traced the body of mountaineer Syed Ali Shah with the help of a drone. The body is located on a glacier at an altitude of about 5,200 meters where it is extremely difficult to reach by land, they added.
The difficult terrain and extreme altitude have made it extremely difficult for rescue workers to reach the spot and retrieve the body through conventional means.
A helicopter rescue operation appears to be the only viable option to safely retrieve the body and hand it over to the bereaved family.
The bereaved family appealed to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government and the relevant authorities to take immediate action and arrange for a rescue operation so that the body can be handed over to the to them as soon as possible.
