PESHAWAR, Aug 27 (APP):As many as 627 government schools are currently non-functional across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, mainly due to a shortage of teachers, lack of students, and various administrative and local disputes, according to the annual education survey.
The survey revealed that the problem was more pronounced in the merged districts, where 411 schools were reported to be non-functional, compared with 216 in the settled districts.
Teacher shortages emerged as the major reason, rendering 226 schools non-functional, while another 66 schools had no students. In addition, 28 schools remained closed due to disputes, while 11 others were affected by encroachment.
North Waziristan recorded the highest number of non-functional schools at 111, followed by Upper South Waziristan with 99 and Upper Kohistan with 68.
The report showed that 53 schools were non-functional in Kurram, 45 in Sub-Division Bannu, 44 in Bannu, 29 in Lower Kohistan, 27 in Khyber and 16 in Hangu.
Among other districts, Battagram had 13 non-functional schools, Mansehra seven, Tank six and Peshawar five, while Swat and Charsadda had four each and Shangla three.
Lakki Marwat and Nowshera each had two non-functional schools, while one school each was reported closed in Mardan, Karak, Kohat and Swabi.
