ISLAMABAD, Aug 26 (APP):Federal Health Minister, Mustafa Kamal on Wednesday said an air-conditioning unit allegedly exploded in the intensive care ward for children at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), triggering a fire that claimed the lives of 14 newborn babies.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of National Health Services, the minister said the presence of oxygen in the ward intensified the blaze.
Mustafa Kamal expressed deep grief over the deaths and said the relevant administration and law-enforcement agencies had reached the site to ascertain the cause of the fire and establish the facts.
The health secretary and other ministry officials were also present at PIMS, he added.
The minister expressed solidarity with the bereaved families and prayed for the departed souls, seeking patience and strength for the families to bear the irreparable loss.
