14th ERC Meeting Steps Up National Monsoon Preparedness

ISLAMABAD, Aug 18 (APP):The Emergency Response Committee (ERC) on Tuesday reviewed national preparedness for the ongoing monsoon spell, focusing on weather forecasts, river flows, vulnerable areas and emergency response measures.
The 14th ERC meeting was held at the National Emergencies Operations Centre (NEOC) in Islamabad on the directions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to strengthen coordination among federal and provincial authorities in dealing with flood and weather-related risks.
The meeting was chaired via video link by Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Professor Ahsan Iqbal and attended by Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr Musadik Malik, Federal Minister for Water Resources Mian Muhammad Mueen Wattoo, NDMA Chairman Lt Gen Inam Haider Malik, representatives of provincial disaster management authorities, the Pakistan Meteorological Department and other senior officials.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said the committee reviewed the current monsoon situation, hydrological conditions, weather outlook, preparedness measures and emergency response arrangements.
The NEOC briefed the meeting on the latest weather forecasts, river flows, vulnerable locations and possible impacts of the continuing monsoon spell. Provincial authorities also shared updates on rescue resources, emergency stocks, evacuation plans and coordination with district administrations.
The committee was informed about ongoing rescue and relief operations, resource deployment and measures being taken in affected and vulnerable areas. Officials also discussed the need to maintain communication, issue timely early warnings and pre-position relief and rescue resources in high-risk districts.
The chair directed relevant departments and response agencies to maintain close coordination and ensure timely implementation of preparedness and response measures. The committee also called for proactive action at the district level to reduce risks and protect vulnerable communities as the monsoon situation develops.
