13th ERC meeting sharpens Pakistan’s monsoon readiness
ISLAMABAD, Aug 11 (APP):The Emergency Response Committee (ERC) on Tuesday reviewed the prevailing monsoon situation, hydrological conditions, weather outlook and national preparedness at its 13th meeting held at the National Emergencies Operations Centre (NEOC) at NDMA headquarters in Islamabad, directing federal and provincial authorities to strengthen coordination, ensure timely early warnings and keep response resources ready to protect vulnerable communities.
The meeting was held on the directions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and chaired by Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Professor Ahsan Iqbal via video link as the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) continued its national-level oversight of preparedness and coordinated response during the 2026 monsoon season.
Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination Dr Musadik Malik, Federal Minister for Water Resources Mian Muhammad Mueen Wattoo, Punjab Minister for Health and Emergency Services Khawaja Salman Rafique, NDMA Chairman Lt Gen Inam Haider Malik, representatives of provincial disaster management authorities, Pakistan Meteorological Department and senior officials from relevant federal ministries and departments attended the meeting.
The National Emergencies Operations Centre presented a comprehensive situational briefing covering the latest weather forecasts, river flows, vulnerable locations and anticipated impacts of the ongoing monsoon spell.
Provincial authorities briefed the committee on preparedness measures, availability of rescue resources, emergency stocks, evacuation plans and coordination with district administrations.
The meeting placed particular emphasis on maintaining uninterrupted communication, timely dissemination of early warnings, pre-positioning relief resources and ensuring the operational readiness of response agencies in vulnerable districts.
The chair directed all relevant departments and response agencies to maintain close coordination and ensure timely implementation of preparedness and response measures.
The committee also stressed the need for proactive action at the district level to minimise risks and ensure the safety of vulnerable communities amid the ongoing monsoon season.
