PFC Chief calls for expansion of Pakistan’s forest cover

LAHORE, Aug 09 (APP):Pakistan Furniture Council (PFC) Chief Executive Officer Mian Kashif Ashfaq underscored the importance of expanding Pakistan’s forest cover through large-scale afforestation, effective conservation measures and greater public awareness to strengthen climate resilience, biodiversity, and ensuring sustainable development.
Chairing a meeting of the PFC Board of Directors here on Sunday, he said Pakistan possessed significant potential to improve its environmental sustainability through coordinated tree plantation initiatives and improved forest management.
He highlighted the vital role of forests in absorbing carbon dioxide, preserving biodiversity, protecting water resources and maintaining ecological balance. He stressed the need to protect existing forests, promote tree plantation campaigns and take practical steps to curb illegal logging.
Mian Kashif Ashfaq said stronger conservation efforts would help reduce the adverse impacts of climate change, including floods, droughts, heatwaves and smog.
He called for nationwide public awareness campaigns to educate citizens about the ecological and economic value of forests and encouraged greater participation by educational institutions, civil society and the private sector in tree plantation and conservation activities.
The PFC chief urged the government to continue strengthening environmental protection policies and implement an effective strategy for sustainable forest management. He said enhanced forest cover would not only improve environmental quality but also support agriculture, water conservation and green economic growth, paving the way for a cleaner, healthier and more climate-resilient Pakistan.
