ISLAMABAD, Aug 9 (APP):From the smudge of blue-ink on paper to high-pitched beep of digital scanner, Pakistan’s identity landscape has been transformed into split of seconds where physical documents are stepping aside for biometric verification making million of citizens able to get access to the vital service facility in the fast-moving
economy.
A small touch on a biometric scanner now carries a powerful meaning. It can verify a person’s identity, unlock financial services, confirm eligibility for government support and connect citizens with essential
facilities. The same thumb that once carried a different social meaning has now become a symbol of digital inclusion.
Behind the silent beep of every biometric scanner, there lies years of innovations and
planning.
The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has transformed fingerprints into a trusted digital identity tool, creating a system where citizens can access essential services with greater speed, accuracy and confidence. The next chapter of this journey is now unfolding through Pakistan’s digital ID
initiative.
Talking to APP, NADRA’ s Spokesperson, Syed Shabahat Ali said Pakistan is on the verge of a major digital transformation as NADRA prepares to launch its Digital ID initiative, a landmark project aimed at making identity verification more secure, accessible and citizen-centric.
He said all technical and legal preparations for the Digital ID project have been completed for formal inauguration of the initiative.

“The Digital ID initiative represents a new era of secure digital identity for Pakistani citizens,”Syed Shabahat Ali said, adding that the next phase is being implemented in collaboration with the Pakistan digital authority through the National Data Exchange System, known as “Wasl”.
He said the system will securely connect government institutions and improve inter-agency data sharing, while NADRA’ s priorities include providing every citizen with a secure digital identity, expanding access to identity services through mobile technology, strengthening biometric verification and enabling secure data integration among government organizations.
Syed Shabahat Ali said NADRA is also working to integrate birth, death, marriage and divorce records with the national identity system in real time. The move, he said, will reduce paperwork and save citizens from repeatedly submitting the same information to different government departments.
Highlighting the progress of the Pak ID platform, he said citizens can now apply for multiple identity documents from their homes, track application status and complete preliminary verification
online.
Recent improvements include biometric and facial verification, family record services, QR code features, civil registration facilities and simplified application procedures.
“Except for obtaining a first Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) or updating biometric data, citizens generally no longer need to visit a NADRA registration centre,” he said.
Syed Shabahat Ali said NADRA is continuously transforming Pak ID into a central digital service platform by expanding online payment facilities, introducing digital documentation, strengthening automated verification systems and improving real-time application tracking.
Emphasizing data protection, he said NADRA considers citizens’ personal information a national asset and ensures that access is provided only for authorized legal purposes following proper verification
procedures.
Discussing outreach, Syed Shabahat Ali said NADRA is expanding services through Mobile Registration Vans, registration centres, special camps and the Pak ID platform, with particular focus on women, senior citizens, persons with disabilities and people living in remote areas.
He said stronger biometric verification will improve transparency in government payments by ensuring accurate identification of beneficiaries and reducing fake or duplicate records.
The Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), he added, will benefit from improved verification, while banks will be able to accelerate account opening through secure electronic Know Your Customer (eKYC) processes.
“Our ultimate goal is simple,” he said, adding, “Citizens should have to visit as few government offices as possible, with most public services becoming securely accessible either from home or through their nearest service centre.”
Technology Expert, Zain Shahid, speaking to the news agency, said biometric authentication has transformed identity verification by making digital services faster, safer and more accessible.
He said fingerprints and facial recognition have helped reduce identity fraud and provided a simple solution for people who struggle with passwords or carrying multiple documents.
“Biometrics had become a bridge between citizens and digital services, but strong data protection and responsible use remain essential to maintaining public trust,” he added.
An elderly citizen, Zameer Yasir, recalled how a thumb impression once represented limitation. “Years ago, my thumb was only a mark on paper.
Today, it proves who I am and helps me receive services with ease,” he added.
Computer science student, Muhammad Musa, said that biometric technology represents a major shift in Pakistan’s digital journey. He praised NADRA’ s efforts in building a secure identity system, saying digital initiatives are making services more accessible and reliable.
The transformation of identity into a digital experience reflects a major step forward in Pakistan’s journey towards modern governance. Through NADRA’ s efforts and the government’s growing digital infrastructure, citizens are gradually moving towards faster, more transparent and accessible services.
