PESHAWAR, Aug 08 (APP): The Peshawar High Court has issued notices to federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments following a petition challenging open and unmonitored sale of acid and dangerous chemicals across province.
A bench comprising Justice Ejaz Anwar and Justice Farah Jamshed sought official responses during an initial hearing on Saturday.
Petitioning lawyer Advocate Habiba filed case to enforce Acid Control and Acid Crime Prevention Act 2011.
She said that goal is not to close businesses, but to protect public especially women and girls—by establishing a strict licensing system, mandatory buyer identification, and sales tracking to prevent misuse.
Legal experts said that while Punjab and Sindh have introduced regulatory frameworks for dangerous chemicals, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa continues to lag behind.
Meanwhile, Dr. Sumeera Shams, Chairperson of KP Commission on Status of Women, confirmed that a draft law regulating acid sales and victim rehabilitation has already been forwarded to Social Welfare Department.
Although Peshawar SSP Operations stated that no acid attack incidents have been reported in the province since 2024, petitioners maintain that lack of active oversight leaves a persistent risk.
