Pakistan’s Mission to UN and Consulate General hold event marking India’s ‘illegal’ annexation of occupied Kashmir
NEW YORK, Aug 06 (APP)::The Pakistan Mission to the United Nations and the Consulate General in New York jointly organized an event titled “Jammu and Kashmir: Advancing a Just and Peaceful Settlement under the UN Charter” to observe Youm-e-Istehsal Kashmir.
Members of the Pakistani and Kashmiri communities, academics, activists and civil society representatives attended held at the Pakistan House, according to a press release of the Consulate General. The proceedings also included the screening of a documentary highlighting the plight of the Kashmiri people.
In his opening remarks, Consul General Aamer Ahmed Atozai stated that India’s illegal and unilateral actions of 5 August 2019 were in violation of the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions and international law.
He highlighted the continuing human rights violations in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir, including restrictions on fundamental freedoms, political detentions, an overwhelming military presence and attempts to alter the demographic composition of the occupied territory. He reaffirmed Pakistan’s principled support for a just and peaceful settlement of the dispute in accordance with the relevant UN resolutions and the wishes of the Kashmiri people.
In his concluding remarks, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering political, diplomatic and moral support for the Kashmiri people’s inalienable right to self-determination.
He emphasized that the Jammu and Kashmir dispute remained an internationally recognized issue on the agenda of the United Nations Security Council and called upon the international community to fulfill its responsibilities and support a peaceful resolution in accordance with international law.
Kashmiri leaders, including Ghulam Nabi Fai, Shahal Khoso, Taj Khan and Sardar Sawar Khan, also addressed the gathering.
They highlighted the grave human rights situation in IIOJK, condemned the atrocities committed by Indian occupation forces and urged the international community to take meaningful steps to end the suffering of the Kashmiri people.
The event concluded with a renewed commitment to continue supporting Kashmiri people’s just and peaceful struggle for freedom, dignity and self-determination.
