ISSI reinforces call for Kashmir’s right to self determination
ISLAMABAD, Aug 05 (APP):The Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) on Wednesday reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering political, diplomatic and moral support for the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) during a seminar marking the seventh Youm-e-Istehsal.
The event, attended by senior diplomats, policymakers, legal experts and Kashmir advocates, called for the implementation of UN Security Council resolutions and the Kashmiri people’s right to self determination.
Organized by the India Study Centre (ISC) at ISSI, the seminar titled “5 August 2019: The Continuing Struggle for Self Determination” brought together leading voices to discuss the continuing situation in IIOJK and its legal, political and humanitarian dimensions.
Representing the President of Pakistan as the chief guest, former federal minister Senator Sherry Rehman said the people of Kashmir continue to face systematic denial of their fundamental rights under Indian occupation.
She said every aspect of Kashmiri identity, culture, religion and property rights has come under pressure since India’s unilateral actions of August 5, 2019. She stressed that the Kashmir dispute is about the people of Kashmir and their internationally recognized right to self determination.
Foreign Office spokesperson Ambassador Tahir Andrabi reiterated Pakistan’s unwavering commitment to the Kashmir cause, reaffirming continued political, diplomatic and moral support for the Kashmiri people.
Referring to the relevant UN Security Council resolutions, Mr Andrabi described India’s August 5, 2019 actions as illegal and unilateral and said Pakistan would continue raising the issue at regional and international forums.
ISSI Director General Ambassador Moin ul Haque, Chairman Board of Governors Ambassador Khalid Mahmood, Chairman Kashmir Institute of International Relations Altaf Hussain Wani and human rights lawyer Barrister Nida Salam also addressed the seminar.
The speakers maintained that New Delhi’s unilateral constitutional measures to alter the status of Jammu and Kashmir violate international law and UN Security Council resolutions.
They said that despite demographic changes, restrictive laws and continued suppression, India would not succeed in weakening the Kashmiri people’s struggle for self determination.
The participants reiterated that Pakistan and its people would continue to stand with the people of Kashmir and extend steadfast political, diplomatic and moral support until the Kashmir dispute is resolved in accordance with the aspirations of the Kashmiri people and relevant UN Security Council resolutions.
