CM inaugurates Nestle biomass steam plant to curb pollution in Punjab
LAHORE, Aug 02 (APP):Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif digitally inaugurated Nestle Pakistan’s state-of-the-art biomass steam plant in Sheikhupura, describing it as a major step towards environmental sustainability, the circular economy and renewable energy.
Built with an investment of approximately $4.5 million, the biomass steam plant will utilise around 72,000 tonnes of agricultural residue annually as fuel, offering an environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative to crop residue burning.
Officials briefed the chief minister that the facility would generate 30 tonnes of steam per hour, resulting in annual fuel cost savings of approximately $2.15 million. The project is also expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 24,345 tonnes annually while contributing to improved air quality by discouraging the open burning of agricultural waste.
During the briefing, the chief minister was informed about Nestle Pakistan’s operations and its ongoing environmental sustainability initiatives.
Addressing the ceremony, Maryam Nawaz appreciated Nestle Pakistan’s contribution to the country’s industrial and environmental sectors, saying the biomass steam plant reflected Pakistan’s growing commitment to promoting the circular economy and renewable energy solutions.
She said the project was fully aligned with the Punjab government’s priorities of environmental protection, cleaner air and sustainable industrial development, adding that such initiatives would play a vital role in addressing climate challenges and promoting responsible industrial practices.
Reaffirming the provincial government’s commitment to supporting climate-friendly initiatives, the chief minister said the Punjab government would continue to extend full cooperation to organisations, including Nestlé Pakistan, working for environmental sustainability and green development.
