Commissioner wants sewerage projects’ early completion to tackle urban flooding problem effectively
MULTAN, Jul 29 (APP):Commissioner Amir Kareem Khan on Wednesday directed Wasa management
to expedite underground sewerage projects and asked districts to keep monitoring river levels and flood mitigation arrangements ready to ensure urban populations and rural settlements remain safe during ongoing monsoon season.
Multan divisional commissioner was presiding over a meeting where officials briefed him on the recent situation stating that no major flooding was forecast during next few days but added that arrangements were ready in advance to tackle any possible flood emergency. Commissioner observed that river levels and weather conditions
were being monitored continuously.He directed all district authorities to remain on high alert despite an improvement in the flood situation, with officials emphasizing that precautionary measures and
emergency preparedness would continue until river conditions fully stabilize.
Meanwhile, deputy commissioner Dr. Faisal Saleem said that the flood flow in the
river Chenab had receded to 110,000 cusecs, while the administration remains
fully alert to deal with any emergency. Only a small amount of water had entered
a few settlements located in the riverine belt and that the overall situation remained
under control, he added.
He urged residents of riverine areas to stay vigilant until the river returns completely
to normal levels and advised the public to rely only on authentic government sources
for information related to the flood situation.
Commissioner Khan directed authorities to keep all flood embankments, protective
dykes and rescue arrangements fully operational. He also ordered the updating of
records of every settlement in riverine areas and directed that relief camps and
evacuation points be designated separately to facilitate emergency response.
He stressed the need for timely public announcements, effective awareness campaigns
and prompt evacuation, if required. He also directed the livestock department to
ensure 100 percent vaccination of livestock and make adequate arrangements for fodder.
He ordered the preparation of tehsil-wise reports on potential agricultural losses and
instructed civic agencies to expedite urban drainage projects to minimize urban flooding
during the monsoon season.
Referring to development initiatives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, the commissioner
said Wasa had been provided with major development schemes to address urban flooding.
He expressed displeasure over delays in underground sewerage projects and directed
that they be made operational without further delay.
He also instructed Wasa to keep all disposal stations and pumping facilities fully functional,
reduce rainwater drainage time in urban areas, accelerate the installation of protective grilles
on manholes, and ensure that no negligence was tolerated during the ongoing monsoon
and potential flood season.
