According to market sources, the increase in tomato prices is mainly due to reduced supply and a gap between demand and availability. The limited arrival of tomatoes in wholesale markets has resulted in a significant rise in prices at the retail level.
Talking to APP, citizens said that tomatoes were available at around Rs200 per kilogram about two weeks ago, but the price had increased by nearly Rs300 within a short period, putting additional pressure on household budgets.
Consumers said that tomatoes are an essential ingredient in daily cooking and the sudden increase in prices has made it difficult for many families, particularly those with limited incomes, to manage their kitchen expenses.
They urged the authorities concerned to ensure a smooth supply of tomatoes, check artificial price hikes and take effective measures to provide relief to consumers.
