TOKYO, Jul 21 (Kyodo/APP):The rainy season has likely ended in regions including Tokyo and Nagoya, the weather agency said, with the Japanese capital marking the first “extremely hot” day of the year as the mercury hit 35 C.
Most of Japan was placed on heatstroke alert on the final day of a three-day weekend. Temperatures had reached 35 C or higher at more than 250 of the country’s 914 observation points as of 6 p.m. the highest number this year, the weather agency said.
The mercury hit 39.4 C in Koshu, Yamanashi Prefecture, west of Tokyo, while 36.1 C was logged in central Tokyo, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
The rainy season came to an end about 22 days later than last year in the Kanto-Koshin region, including Tokyo, and 23 days later in the Tokai region centering on Nagoya in Aichi Prefecture.
The announcement came after the rainy season was declared over in the Kyushu region in southwestern Japan on July 13.
High temperatures are expected to continue Tuesday, according to the agency.
