CM Murad condemns India’s unilateral attempt to suspend Indus Waters Treaty

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has strongly condemned India’s unilateral attempt to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), calling it a reckless violation of international law, treaty obligations, and established norms governing trans boundary rivers.

KARACHI, Jul 11 (APP): Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has strongly condemned India’s unilateral attempt to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), calling it a reckless violation of international law, treaty obligations, and established norms governing trans boundary rivers.
The Chief Minister said that the Indus Waters Treaty is not a political arrangement that can be set aside at the whim of any government but a binding international agreement that has survived wars and decades of regional tensions.
“India has no legal or moral authority to unilaterally suspend or abrogate the Treaty. Any attempt to weaponise water is unacceptable and threatens peace, stability, and the livelihood of millions of people in Pakistan,” he said.
Syed Murad Ali Shah said that the River Indus is the lifeline of Pakistan and the very soul of Sindh. “For thousands of years, Sindhu has nurtured our civilisation, our agriculture, our economy, and our identity. Any aggression against the waters of the Indus is an aggression against the people of Sindh and Pakistan.”
The Chief Minister said that the Pakistan Peoples Party has always stood as the strongest voice for the protection of Pakistan’s water rights. “From Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto to Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, and under the leadership of President Asif Ali Zardari and Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the Pakistan Peoples Party has never compromised on issues affecting the rights of the federation and the people of Sindh.”
Shah said that Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has captured the sentiments of every Sindhi and every Pakistani through his powerful pledge: (Marsoon Marsoon Sindhu Na Desoon). “This is not merely a slogan; it is a solemn commitment that we will never allow anyone to deprive Pakistan of its rightful share of the waters of the Indus. We shall defend our river through diplomatic, legal, constitutional, and democratic means, and with complete national unity.”
The Chief Minister called upon the Federal Government to vigorously pursue all available diplomatic and legal remedies under international law and to raise India’s actions before appropriate international forums. He urged the international community to ensure respect for treaty obligations and to reject any attempt to use water as an instrument of political coercion.
Syed Murad Ali Shah said that the people of Sindh stand united behind PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in defending the Indus River and Pakistan’s water rights. “The Pakistan Peoples Party will continue to resist every attempt to undermine the country’s water security. The Indus is our history, our heritage, and our future. We shall protect it with unwavering resolve.”
He concluded by reaffirming that the Government of Sindh would continue to safeguard the province’s water interests and would stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Pakistan in defending the country’s legitimate rights under the Indus Waters Treaty.
