FAO calls for climate action, safe food

MULTAN, Jul 02 (APP): The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) on Thursday stressed the need for climate action and safe food systems, at an event held here with women farmers and government stakeholders.
The observance, marking World Environment Day and World Food Safety Day 2026, was held under the theme “Call for Climate Action and Safe Food Everywhere.” It was organised under FAO’s Green Climate Fund-supported project, “Transforming the Indus Basin with Climate Resilient Agriculture and Water Management,” co-financed by the governments of Punjab and Sindh.
Representatives of the Punjab Food Authority, the Environmental Protection Agency Punjab, and women farmer facilitators attended the event, which focused on the link between environmental protection, climate-resilient agriculture and food safety.
Speaking on the occasion, FAO Punjab Office In-charge Noella Kamwendo said safe food systems begin long before food reaches markets or households. She said a healthy environment, climate-resilient agriculture and safe food systems could not be treated separately, as they were all part of a single chain running from soil, water and seed to farm management, storage and the table.
She said the FAO project was helping vulnerable farming communities adopt climate-resilient practices, improve water management and strengthen their adaptive capacity, calling these measures essential foundations for safer food systems.
Punjab Food Authority Principal Officer Dr Aftab Qamar spoke on food safety across the farm-to-table cycle and the impact of pesticides. Environmental Protection Agency Punjab District Officer Dr Tahir Abbas spoke on the effects of stubble burning on soil health and the environment.
FAO Communications Specialist Shahnawaz Arif, in his closing remarks, called for wider adoption of responsible farming practices and greater community learning through Farmer Field Schools and climate-resilient agriculture platforms.
Women Farmer Facilitators at the event said they were supporting Women Open Schools at the community level, where farmers learn climate-resilient practices and are encouraged to view agriculture as a livelihood and business opportunity.
