WASA on high alert as rain continues in twin cities

Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has been placed on high alert to ensure smooth drainage operations as intermittent rainfall continued across the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Wednesday.

RAWALPINDI, Jul 01 (APP): Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has been placed on high alert to ensure smooth drainage operations as intermittent rainfall continued across the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Wednesday.
Managing Director WASA Azizullah Khan said field staff and heavy machinery have been deployed in low-lying areas to prevent urban flooding. Drainage work is actively underway in Liaquat Bagh, Committee Chowk Underpass, Murree Road, and the low-lying localities of Sadiqabad.

He added that Nullah Lai is being monitored continuously, with the water flow currently remaining within normal levels.

According to the latest rainfall data, Golra received the highest rainfall at 37 mm, followed by Bokra 12 mm, Saidpur 10 mm, Kutchery 10 mm, Pirwadhai 9 mm, New Katarian 9 mm, Gawalmandi 8 mm, Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) 6 mm, and Shamsabad 5 mm.

On the instructions of the Managing Director, field officers are personally supervising drainage operations to ensure a timely response in affected areas, a WASA spokesperson said.

WASA has urged citizens not to throw garbage into drains or sewers and to avoid removing manhole covers to ensure the uninterrupted functioning of the drainage system. Residents have also been advised to contact the WASA helpline immediately in case of any emergency.
