GIMS Hospital performs Pakistan’s first semi-active robotic neurospine surgery

SUKKUR, Jul 01 (APP): The Gambat Institute of Medical Sciences (GIMS) has carried out Pakistan’s first successful semi-active robotic neurospine surgery.

GIMS Spokesperson Jameel Haider described the procedure as a milestone for the country’s healthcare sector and said it reflects the Sindh government’s focus on expanding access to advanced medical services within the province.

The surgery was led by Head of Robotic Neurospine Surgery, Dr. Pir Asad Aziz with support from the institute’s surgical team. The hospital administration said the use of semi-active robotic technology improves precision in complex spine procedures and is associated with reduced blood loss, lower postoperative pain, fewer complications and faster recovery times.

Director GIMS, Dr. Rahim Bux Bhatti said the integration of robotics at the institute is aimed at making high risk neurospine interventions safer and more effective, while raising standards of patient care.

The provincial government credited the achievement to continued investment in health infrastructure.

A statement issued by GIMS noted the support of Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, and Sindh Health Minister Dr. Azra Fazal Pechuho.

Facilities that were previously available only in a limited number of developed countries are now accessible to patients in Sindh,” the statement added.

GIMS Spokesperson said the successful operation reinforces its role as one of the country’s leading public-sector institutions for advanced surgical care. The administration said it would continue to expand its robotic surgery programme, support medical research, and adopt new technologies to deliver care to international standards.

Officials said the institute’s objective is to ensure patients can access high quality, specialised treatment locally, without needing to travel abroad.
