Advisory issued to protect cotton crop from Reddening and Wilting

MULTAN, Jun 30 (APP):The Punjab agriculture department has issued an advisory for cotton growers following
reports of cotton plant reddening and wilting in some early-sown cotton fields in parts of the Sahiwal, Multan and Dera Ghazi Khan divisions.
According to spokesman, the phenomenon of cotton reddening is primarily caused by
an imbalance of essential nutrients, particularly deficiencies of potassium and magnesium,
along with weak root systems and adverse soil conditions. In contrast, cotton wilting is
mainly associated with excessive or insufficient soil moisture, a situation aggravated by
the prevailing dry weather conditions.
To minimize crop losses, the advisory urges farmers to consult local agricultural experts
before taking remedial measures. They asked farmers to prepare a foliar spray by mixing
500 grams of potassium nitrate and 350 grams of magnesium sulphate in 100 litres of
water for application over one acre of cotton.
The advisory also stresses the importance of carrying out water scouting before irrigation
to assess the crop’s actual water needs. Farmers should ensure the crop does not suffer
from water stress, particularly during the critical boll formation stage, as adequate moisture
is essential for healthy plant growth and optimum yield.
The Punjab agriculture department had advised cotton growers to remain in close contact
with local agriculture extension staff for timely guidance and field-specific recommendations.
