Alhamra launches museum conservation project with German Embassy support

LAHORE, Jun 30 (APP):Lahore Arts Council on Tuesday launched the Museum Collection Conservation and
Re-framing Project at the Alhamra Museum of Modern Arts with the support of the
Germany Embassy in Pakistan to preserve Pakistan’s artistic heritage.
The project was part of the ongoing renovation of the museum and aimed to protect
valuable artworks through museum-quality conservation framing and improved storage
facilities.
According to a spokesperson, the new framing system would help safeguard paintings
from dust, humidity, excessive light and other environmental factors that could damage
artwork over time.
A survey of the museum’s collection identified 52 artworks requiring conservation, including
19 high-priority pieces of historical and artistic importance. The first phase of the project
would focus on conserving and re-framing 20 artworks by pioneering Pakistani artist Anna
Molka Ahmed using archival-quality materials and internationally accepted conservation
techniques.
To improve preservation, Alhamra has also installed a temperature-controlled storage
system to protect its growing collection from heat and humidity.
Speaking on the occasion, Alhamra Executive Director Muhammad Nawaz Gondal said
preserving historic artworks was a responsibility towards future generations and that the
project would help bring the museum’s conservation practices in line with international
standards.
He said the partnership with the German Embassy reflected a shared commitment
to protecting cultural heritage and promoting international cooperation in the field of
museum conservation.
The project was expected to be completed in early August 2026 and would improve
the preservation, storage and display of historically significant artworks at the Alhamra
Museum of Modern Arts.
