Monsoon forecast; heavy downpour, flash flooding likely from July

RAWALPINDI, Jun 29 (APP): Monsoon rains are expected to begin in the first week of July, with heavy downpours, flash flooding and landslides likely in various parts of the country.
According to the Met Office, the first spell of monsoon rains during the first week of July is likely to bring windstorms, thunderstorms and intermittent rainfall to upper and central regions, with isolated heavy falls.
A westerly wave is expected to enter upper parts of the country by the evening or night of June 30, while moist currents from the Arabian Sea will continue to penetrate eastern and central areas. Another system from the Bay of Bengal is likely to reach upper regions from July 2, triggering widespread monsoon activity.
In Punjab, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal and Jhelum, windstorms and thunderstorms with intermittent rain are expected from July 1 to 6, with chances of heavy rainfall at isolated places.
Rawalpindi administration has prompted its allied departments to put on high alert to deal with possible situations.
Surveillance and monitoring of major rain drains have been accelerated, while residents have been informed to be careful during the rains.
The PMD also warned that heavy downpours may cause urban flooding in low-lying areas of Rawalpindi and Islamabad, while landslides are likely in Murree, Galiyat and other hilly areas between July 2 and 6.
Strong winds and lightning may damage weak structures, solar panels, electricity poles and billboards, the forecast added.
Authorities have advised tourists and travellers to avoid unnecessary movement during the spell and exercise caution. Farmers have been urged to plan agricultural activities accordingly and ensure the protection of livestock.
The Met Office has directed all relevant departments, district administrations, and the rescue and emergency services to remain alert and complete advance arrangements to deal with any untoward situation.
The ongoing heatwave conditions are expected to subside gradually due to the rainfall, bringing relief to citizens.
