D-8 Secretary General calls for greater empowerment of women in diplomacy

ISLAMABAD, Jun 24 (APP):Secretary General of the Developing-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation (D-8), Ambassador Sohail Mahmood, on the occasion of the International Day of Women in Diplomacy, paid tribute to the vital contributions of women diplomats and called for enhanced efforts to ensure their greater participation in shaping global peace, cooperation and sustainable development.
In a message posted on his X account on Wednesday, Ambassador Sohail Mahmood said women were playing an indispensable role in building a more peaceful, inclusive and cooperative world at a time when the international community was facing increasingly complex and multifaceted challenges.
He said nations needed the best minds to address evolving global issues, adding that women across D-8 member states were making significant contributions to diplomacy and public service through their leadership.
From heading critical missions to driving intense multilateral negotiations, women in D-8 countries have increasingly assumed prominent roles in foreign policy, multilateral fora, and international engagement — bringing diverse perspectives and fostering more inclusive approaches to global problem-solving, he added.
The Secretary General said their achievements reflected not only national progress but also a broader global transformation towards more representative, inclusive and effective diplomacy.
Ambassador Sohail Mahmood emphasized that the International Day of Women in Diplomacy served as a reminder of the need to further support and empower women by ensuring equal opportunities, strengthening institutional mechanisms and creating environments where their voices were fully heard and valued.
He reaffirmed D-8’s commitment to promoting the role of women in diplomacy and acknowledged their exceptional contributions in fostering dialogue, cooperation and understanding among nations.
The Secretary General said women diplomats continued to play a pivotal role in advancing peace, sustainable development and lasting progress, and deserved greater recognition and support at all levels of international engagement.
