Advisor reviews child protection progress, reaffirms support for reforms in KP

PESHAWAR, Jun 22 (APP):Advisor to the Chief Minister on Social Welfare, Special Education and Women Empowerment, Malak Liaqat Ali Khan visited the provincial office of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Child Protection and Welfare Commission (KPCPWC) and reviewed progress on child protection initiatives and future plans.
Secretary Social Welfare Sharif Hussain was also present during the visit.
During the briefing, Chief KP Child Commission Ijaz Muhammad Khan informed the Advisor about the Commission’s mandate, institutional framework and ongoing efforts to strengthen the child protection system across the province.
He said a total of 34,992 children had so far been facilitated through case management services, including social, legal and psychosocial support, while several cases had also been referred to relevant agencies for further assistance.
According to the briefing, psychosocial counselling was provided to 19,656 children, while 6,973 received social support services.
The meeting was informed that the proposed Child Protection Policy would soon be presented before the executive authority and later submitted to the provincial cabinet for approval.
It was further shared that the Chief Minister had approved establishment of five new Child Protection Units in Dera Ismail Khan, Nowshera, Malakand, Shangla and Mansehra, increasing the total number of districts covered to 17.
Officials also highlighted key challenges facing the Commission, including delays in filling vacant positions, approval of the Child Protection Policy, reforms in child protection rules and notification of regulations for child care institutions.
The Advisor appreciated the Commission’s performance and assured full support for advancing child protection reforms.
He also expressed interest in participating in upcoming child protection initiatives planned across different districts.
Addressing officers and staff, Malak Liaqat Ali Khan stressed innovation, institutional improvement and proactive leadership, directing departments to evaluate performance and develop practical measures to improve service delivery.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to strengthen child protection through institutional reforms, improved coordination, enhanced human resources and effective implementation of child protection laws and policies.
