LAHORE, Jun 20 (APP):An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Saturday announced its reserved verdict in the May 9 case relating to the burning of police vehicles in Mughalpura, sentencing several Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders to 10 years imprisonment while acquitting PTI vice chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi.
ATC Administrative Judge Manzer Ali Gill announced the verdict in FIR No. 1570/23 at Kot Lakhpat Jail. The court sentenced Dr Yasmin Rashid, Ejaz Chaudhry, Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed and Omar Sarfraz Cheema to 10 years in prison each.
The workers Shah Din, Khawar Hussain, Ahmad Zahid and Hafiz Syed Rehman were also sentenced to 10 years imprisonment each.
However, the court acquitted Shah Mehmood Qureshi along with PTI workers Salman, Adnan, Shoaib, Shahzaib, Rizwan, Haroon, Azam, Shamshad, Abbas, Tayyab and Hafiz Usman due to lack of evidence.
A total of 22 suspects, including PTI leaders and workers, had been nominated in the case. Two of the accused had already been declared proclaimed offenders, while the court announced its verdict regarding the remaining 20 accused.
According to the prosecution, the convicted leaders were involved in planning the May 9 violence and inciting party workers to participate in riots and acts of rebellion. The prosecution produced 37 witnesses in support of its case and sought convictions for the accused.
The Mughalpura police vehicles arson case is considered one of the key cases linked to the May 9 riots. With this verdict, decisions have now been announced in eight major May 9-related cases.
