LAHORE, Jun 19 (APP):Punjab Police deployed more than 30,000 officers and personnel across the province on Friday to ensure security for mourning processions and Majalis held on the 3rd of Muharram.
According to a Punjab Police spokesperson, a total of 148 mourning processions and 3,843 Majalis were held across the province. In Lahore, 10 mourning processions were taken out while 411 Majalis were organised under strict security measures.
More than 17,000 community volunteers also assisted police in maintaining security at processions and Majalis throughout the province, the spokesperson added.
Punjab IGP Abdul Kareem said security would remain on high alert during the first ten days of Muharram and strict implementation of Section 144 imposed by the Punjab government would be ensured. He said aerial firing, display of weapons, dissemination of hate material and provocative activities had been prohibited, adding that no procession or Majlis would be allowed outside designated routes and approved venues.
The IGP said all Muharram-related activities were being monitored through cameras installed by the Punjab Safe Cities Authority in coordination with district administrations. He further said personnel of the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), Special Branch, Traffic Police, Dolphin Squad, Police Response Unit (PRU) and other field formations had been deployed for Muharram security duties across the province.
Abdul Kareem directed officers to ensure strict enforcement of the Loudspeaker Act and take effective action against individuals involved in spreading hateful content on social media. He added that control rooms established in all districts had been linked with the Central Police Office’s central control room and were maintaining constant coordination to monitor the overall security situation.
