IGP meets religious scholars, peace committees ahead of Muharram

PESHAWAR, Jun 17 (APP):Inspector General of Police Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Zulfiqar Hameed chaired an important meeting of leading religious scholars and provincial peace committees at the Central Police Office Peshawar to finalize security arrangements and promote religious harmony during Muharram-ul-Haram.
According to a spokesperson for the Central Police Office, prominent religious scholars and central members of peace committees from Peshawar attended the meeting in person, while representatives and scholars from other districts and remote areas joined through video link from regional police offices. Additional IGs, DIGs, CCPO Peshawar and SSP Operations Peshawar were also present.
During the meeting, the IGP held detailed discussions with scholars and peace committee members from different schools of thought regarding maintaining peace and security, particularly during Ashura. Suggestions from participants aimed at further strengthening security arrangements were reviewed.
The IGP stressed the need for close coordination, unity and harmony among followers of different schools of thought throughout Muharram.
He said police could not achieve complete success against criminal elements without public support and called for collective efforts to ensure peace, stability and prosperity.
He highlighted the important role of religious scholars in shaping public attitudes and promoting patience, tolerance and responsible conduct.
He said Muharram carries a collective responsibility to preserve brotherhood and social cohesion while setting aside differences in the larger interest of national stability and future generations.
Zulfiqar Hameed directed police officers to enhance daily coordination with district administrations and local peace committees to prevent any untoward incidents and ensure people perform religious obligations in a peaceful environment.
Members of the provincial peace committees appreciated the professional performance of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Police and offered voluntary services of their workers to support security arrangements during Muharram. They also assured full cooperation and suggested strict implementation of procession timings, restrictions on unnecessary movement of unrelated individuals, and stronger engagement between police and local elders.
Addressing participants, the IGP said Muharram, especially the days of Ashura, conveys lessons of sacrifice, unity and brotherhood.He said the police, in consultation with public representatives, religious scholars, peace committees and business circles, was preparing a comprehensive security plan to eliminate anti-social elements and maintain law and order across the province.
He reaffirmed that the state would fulfil its responsibilities and that no room would be allowed for disruptive activities. The meeting concluded with a collective prayer for national unity, peace and stability.
