ISLAMABAD, Jun 16 (APP): A roundtable conference on the challenges and opportunities facing women journalists in Pakistan was organized by the Women Media Center (WMC) here on Tuesday.
The conference brought together women journalists, media experts, and representatives of journalists’ organizations to discuss issues related to press freedom, digital media, gender equality, and women’s representation in media institutions.
Participants exchanged views on the current state of freedom of expression and press freedom in Pakistan, while also highlighting the growing challenges posed by misinformation and fake news on digital platforms. The discussion emphasized the need for social media influencers and digital content creators to uphold ethical standards, verify information, and promote responsible journalism.
The event also focused on the barriers preventing women journalists from reaching decision-making positions in newsrooms, including gender bias, workplace discrimination, and limited career advancement opportunities. Participants called for stronger institutional support, mentorship programs, and inclusive policies to increase women’s leadership in the media sector.
Concerns were raised over the low participation of women in press clubs and journalists’ unions across the country. Speakers stressed the importance of creating a more supportive environment and adopting measures to improve women’s representation in media organizations and professional bodies.
Participants appreciated the contributions of WMC over the past 21 years in promoting gender equality in media and providing professional training opportunities for thousands of women journalists. Members of the WMC Alumni Network shared their experiences and highlighted the network’s role in fostering professional growth, mentorship, and collaboration among women media professionals.
The conference concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthening women’s participation, leadership, and representation in Pakistan’s media landscape.
