Rain, chilly weather forecast; farmers cautioned

RAWALPINDI, Jun 15 (APP): Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast windstorms, gusty winds and rain with thunder in upper and central parts of the country from June 16 to 20, with occasional chilly conditions expected during the spell.
According to the Met Office, a strong westerly weather system is likely to enter upper parts of the country on June 16 and persist till June 20, while moist currents from the Arabian Sea are also expected to penetrate upper and central regions.
Under the influence of this system, intermittent rain, windstorms and thunderstorm activity is expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum and Lahore, with chances of heavy rainfall and hailstorms at isolated places, bringing a noticeable chill in the air.
The Met Office said weather conditions in Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan are also likely to remain unstable, with rain-wind/thunderstorm forecast from June 16 to 22 in AJK and from June 18 to 22 in Gilgit-Baltistan.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rain with wind and thunder is expected in various districts from June 16 to 20, with isolated heavy falls and hailstorms.
The department warned that strong winds, hailstorms and lightning could damage weak structures, electric poles, signboards, billboards and solar panels, and advised the public to avoid unnecessary exposure to open areas during severe weather.
It also cautioned about possible landslides in hilly areas of Gilgit-Baltistan, Kashmir and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa from June 16 to 21, which may disrupt road traffic.
Heavy rainfall may cause urban flooding and water accumulation in low-lying areas of Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Lahore and Faisalabad, the Met Office said.
Farmers were advised to plan agricultural activities in view of the weather conditions, while tourists and travellers were urged to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel.
All relevant departments, district administrations and emergency services have been directed to remain alert and ensure preparedness to deal with any untoward situation.
