PSDP 2026-27 earmarks Rs 530.273 million for biometric passport system upgrade

ISLAMABAD, Jun 12 (APP): The federal government has earmarked Rs 530.273 million under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2026-27 for the ongoing up-gradation of the Biometric Identification System for Passport Applications at the Directorate General of Immigration and Passports (I&P) Headquarters in Islamabad.
According to Budget 2026-27 documents released on Friday, the project was approved by the Departmental Development Working Party (DDWP) on May 12, 2023 and aims to strengthen biometric verification, improve security features and enhance the efficiency of passport issuance services.
The total cost of the project stands at Rs994.956 million, of which Rs464.683 million had been spent up to June 30, 2026. The remaining throw-forward liability has been estimated at Rs530.273 million as of July 1, 2026.
The allocation for fiscal year 2026-27 covers the entire remaining cost of the project and is expected to facilitate its completion.
The upgraded biometric identification system is expected to improve identity verification processes, enhance data security and support faster and more reliable passport processing services for citizens.
The project is among the ongoing initiatives aimed at modernizing passport services and strengthening identity management infrastructure in the country.
