ISLAMABAD, Jun 9 (APP):Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Professor Ahsan Iqbal on Tuesday paid tribute to veteran journalist, writer and intellectual Altaf Hassan Qureshi, describing him as a symbol of principled journalism whose intellectual legacy remains highly relevant in an era marked by information warfare and disinformation.
Addressing a condolence reference held at the National Press Club as the keynote speaker, the minister said modern conflicts were increasingly being fought in the information domain, where societies and states were targeted through misinformation, propaganda and psychological operations rather than conventional military means.
He said hostile forces often sought to create internal discord, undermine public trust in institutions and weaken social cohesion, making nations vulnerable from within.
“When confusion, polarization and distrust take root in a society, it becomes a soft target that can be destabilized without the need for large-scale external attacks,” he observed.
Ahsan Iqbal said that in such challenging circumstances, Altaf Hassan Qureshi’s style of journalism offered valuable lessons for both society and the media fraternity.
He noted that the late journalist used the power of his pen not merely to report events but to promote intellectual awareness and critical thinking among readers.
“Altaf Hassan Qureshi was not a journalist driven by the race for breaking news. Through his analytical writings and intellectual discourse, he contributed to shaping minds and strengthening society,” he said.
The minister said the depth and quality of Qureshi’s writings stemmed from rigorous study, careful observation and thoughtful analysis. His articles reflected not only firsthand experiences and interactions but also a profound engagement with history, ideas and national issues, he added.
He emphasized that young journalists could draw important lessons from the life and work of the veteran writer, particularly his commitment to professionalism, scholarship and public service.
“Altaf Hassan Qureshi proved that journalism is not merely a profession; it is a mission. He demonstrated that journalism is not about creating noise but about interpreting realities and contributing to the constructive development of society,” he remarked.
The minister said the late journalist had shown that journalism should not be viewed as a means of fame or wealth but as a responsibility toward society and the nation.
Highlighting Qureshi’s personal qualities, Ahsan Iqbal said one of his most remarkable yet lesser-known attributes was his simplicity and humility. Despite enjoying immense respect, recognition and influence, he maintained a life of modesty and spiritual contentment.
“He possessed name, fame, honour and public respect, yet remained an exceptionally humble and selfless individual. Even today, anyone visiting his home can witness the simplicity that defined his personality,” he said.
The minister said Altaf Hassan Qureshi’s intellectual contributions, moral integrity and commitment to purposeful journalism would continue to inspire future generations of media professionals and thinkers.
