DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Jun 09 (APP):A suspected ringleader of a notorious robbery gang wanted in multiple armed robbery cases, including the recent looting of a passenger bus on the CPEC route, was killed during a police operation in the mountainous area near Wandha-Ali, the police said on Tuesday.
The operation was carried out by Paniala and Kirri Khaisour police following the directives of District Police Officer (DPO) Ziauddin Ahmed and under the supervision of SP Paharpur Division Iqbal Khan Baloch.
Acting on credible intelligence regarding the presence of a wanted gang in the area, a heavy police contingent launched a targeted raid.
According to police, the gang comprised Yusuf, Umar Gul, sons of Mohibullah, Nazir son of Syed Akbar, Rashid son of Nawaz, and several accomplices. The suspects were wanted in several robbery cases registered at Paniala and Kirri Khaisour police stations and were allegedly involved in several highway robberies along the CPEC and Chashma Road corridors.
The suspects opened fire on the police party upon arrival, triggering an intense exchange of gunfire that lasted nearly half an hour. The officers retaliated against the fire in self-defence while attempting to prevent the suspects from escaping.
Following the operation, police recovered the body of Umar Gul son of Mohibullah, a resident of Wandha-Ali, from the scene. The remaining suspects managed to flee into the surrounding hills.
According to police, the deceased suspect was wanted in multiple robbery cases. The police also recovered a Kalashnikov rifle, two magazines, 32 rounds of ammunition and a hand grenade from his possession.
A search and combing operation is continuing in the area to track down and arrest the remaining members of the gang.
DPO Ziauddin Ahmed appreciated the officers who participated in the operation, reiterating the police department’s commitment to eliminating criminal networks and maintaining law and order across the district.
